Evan Turner, actions speak louder than words...

O.K. o.k. we all can't wait for the coming season, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Can we just take a moment to discuss something that hasn't been discussed enough since Evan Turner chose to honor his word, and stay at Ohio State for another season.

Aside from the obvious; He says he liked school, liked his teammates, and was finally receiving the recognition he worked for throughout his basketball career-- He said he would stay; This showed character. I think he has an idealistic view of the world and truly believes that people are supposed to actually do the things they say they will do.

I mean lets face it, his stay at OSU hadn't been without its challenges. He put in a lot of work last season, and he excelled throughout the trials and expectations.

He came back to school not only because he had goals he wanted to accomplish on the collegiate level, but also because he didn't want to leave his the athletic department of OSU in a bind. You know that scholarship problem and all.

Unlike others I could mention, who put themselves first, he stayed the course. I mean self preservation is the standard isn't it? Didn't other previous players "go for their's" with little comment. Let not talk aboutt what Iowa did to its leading scorer after his giving them three good years. As a senior they said, "Yeah, the thanks but we are pursuing a different direction. Go find another place to lay your head" This song is being sung all to often these days. Everyone and everything is out for number one these days. Get yours or be gotten...But I digress.

I wanted to talk about character. Evan Turner's character as a person as well as a player to be specific. It is my opinion, throughout the many years I have had the honor of watching this young man play, his character determines his actions.

Whether he is on the court and decides unselfishly to pass for the higher percentage shot, or his decision to play both ends of the court all out for over 40 minutes every game, or whether he decides to take a low profile role in Serbia just to keep the peace in the ranks.

He tries to make the best decision for all concerned. Very democratic. No pun intended. But equally concerning.

I know many of you were looking forward to a break out performance from Turner in Serbia, as was I. Just imagine what could he do with a support cast of All Stars? Oh, the possibilities... We all expected a much more forceful performance with all the talent he had surrounding him.

Bottom line, the "off court" politics got in the way. From the start he got the nod from all the NBA recruiters during the tryouts. We all read the articles proclaiming him "the most NBA ready player" at the tryouts. Having looked at his previous responses to similar situations, I see now that he chose the path of least resistance with his USA World teammates. He knew he could contribute just as much as on the defensive end or as a supporting character as he could playing the lead role. So that's what he did.

A mature and high minded decision. A good decision? Well...

Maybe, just maybe, the team really needed him to decide to do what he does best, play hard. Don't worry about the tender egos of his teammates. Maybe they needed him to be a less generous peacekeeper, and more of a team leader who does what he has to for a win. Did everyone see MJ's hall of fame speech? There is an "I" in win.

Had he not worry so much about the talk off the court and let his actions lead his time to victory, the team would have probably stood, even through all the boos, for the gold medal instead of the bronze.

I don't think he will make the same mistake again. I hope that in the future he will decide to think about winning first instead of playing peacemaker. Everyone complains less after a win anyway.

I say this because I watched his return interview. I believe he learned a valuable lesson. Winning always silences critics, or goes a long way to discredit a lot of jealous "hater" commentary.

Good lesson to learn. Better to have learned it now rather than later when the stakes will be higher in the NBA.

Now, let's look at what he did throughout last season. What was he called upon to do? Everything. What did he do? Everything. His stats attest to that fact. What did he get? Knocked out in the first round by Sienna, a team they could very well have beaten, and robbed of the POY award that again his stats can attest that was well deserved.

In spite of those dissappointments, what did he do? "I'm comin back..." I got some things to finish up here at college", he intimated.

Instead of taking his leave for the NBA, he decided to stay and finish what he started. There are still some things left on the table this season; POY, Big Ten championship, NCAA birth on and on...

More importantly, this guy is a true competitor. He wants to actually play in the NBA, not just get paid sitting the bench. He would have gone in the first round, if not in the lottery, last year. The temptation of $$$ had to be there.

It's not always about the mighty dollar. Hmmm refreshing... Evan Turner said his plan was to improve on his skills and perfect his game this summer and come back even stronger this season.

What else does he need to do, really?

Yeah, a little more weight, a better perimeter shooting, and better ball handling with less turnovers wouldn't hurt. But c'mon, he could have worked on that while in the pros.

My point: He chose to keep his word to Ohio, his teammates, and his fans. He will give us the benefit of all his hard work for another year at the collegiate level.

I, for one, would like to thank him.

I want to thank him for being a role model to other young men.To let them know that good things can happen when you follow through on your word.

I want to thank him for owning whatever is put on his plate, and rising to the challenge. But most importantly, I want to commend him on his character, one that guides his actions on and off the court.

He is of GOOD CHARACTER.

That will bode well for him in the future and the future of the OSU Buckeyes.
